Alan Burton
Alan has had wide-ranging experience in a number of areas of education. After working extensively in secondary schools as a successful teacher and advisor, he was appointed Principal of Avondale College. Subsequently he held senior positions in the Department of Education and later the Ministry of Education in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. More recently he has worked closely with boards and management of primary, intermediate and secondary schools in the state, integrated and independent school sectors. His successful experience also includes the establishment of five new State schools and one Catholic school, developing area strategies for schooling for the Ministry of Education, organisational review of existing schools, appraisal of school leadership and boards, teacher education, and professional development.
Alan has served as acting principal in a number of Auckland and Wellington schools, and as a member of three school boards. He has an excellent understanding of schools and their diverse communities, and of their particular challenges and opportunities.
Specialist areas: Principal and senior management selection; performance appraisal; governance issues; resolution of differences between board and staff; school and community consultation; evaluation of teacher and school programmes; review and reorganisation of schools, implementing and managing change.
